Rare Wines To Be Auctioned at Akron Art Museum

The 15th annual Akron Wine Auction, offering over one hundred bottles of wine, will be held on June 12th.

For the first time since being established, the event will take place in the grand lobby of the Akron Art Museum. The evening’s itinerary includes two auctions — one silent and one live — as well as cocktails, dinner and an after-party gala. Patron tickets are $375 per person.

During the silent auction, which will take place before the 6:30 dinner, 120 bottles of wine will be available to view and bid on. Following dinner, the live auction will feature 20 rare wines. And what will people be drinking when deciding on which rare vintage to acquire?

Well, the featured winemakers of the evening, both from Napa Valley, are Burgees Cellars and Firestone Vineyard. Burgees Cellars, which will be providing the red wine for the evening, creates individual hand-crafted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Firestone Vineyard creates exceptional white wines, aptly described as “brightly flavored, crisp and delicious.”

What truly stands out about Firestone Vineyard wines is their focus on the physiological balance of the vines, much like the careful gastronomical attention gourmet chefs put into their produce. The dinner, which is catered by Cleveland’s Spice of Life, will be followed by the after-auction music and dancing gala held at the Akron Golf Charities Terrace.

French champagne house Veuve Clicquot will be holding their third annual charity polo match June 27th on Governor’s Island in New York.

Roughly 800 yards from the southern tip of Manhattan, Governor’s Island is one of the most prestigious locations for the sport. In the early part of the 20th century, the former army base was a regular host to polo matches; it’s last match was played in September of 1941, right before the United States entered WWII.

Veuve Clicquot brought back polo to Governor’s Island in May of 2008, when they staged a charity polo match to raise money for American Friends of Sentebale. Founded in 2006, the U.S. based charity supports at-risk children in Lesotho, Africa.

The Polo Classic is one of the staples of Veuve Clicquot’s social calender. Last year’s version was attended by Prince Henry of Wales – his first formal visit to the United States. Also in attendance were such high profile celebrities as Madonna, Kate Hudson, Marc Jacobs, LL Cool J, and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho.

Regular attendance is free of charge, although seats inside the lawn picnic cost $250. Along with the tickets, included is unlimited Veuve Clicquot champagne, a custom Polo picnic blanket, and a gourmet picnic lunch from Union Square Café’s Michael Romano.
